Yoshio vs. Taki[ba]

  1. Hello nohoho,

My name is Zhi. (pronounced Z)
First off I want to say, you have an amazing post. I download all the videos while I'm supposed to be doing work, its a fabulous distraction.

I was wondering, are you doing this stateside or from Japan? If you are in Japan, I was wondering if you are in the kantou area and would like to get together for some gaming? I'm living in Motosumiyoshi (toyoko-sen) and I often go to Shibuya to play Turbo/HYPER. I would rate my skill level as intermediate on a Japanese scale, with huge need to improve and always willing to take pointers.

Anyways my question to you really is, would you like to meet up and play? I know it must sound silly because

    1)you're stateside (OR)
2)you're on Japanese God status at Turbo

but in the case that you are not 1) and would like to have a friendly match or two and just talk about the scene, I would love for a chance to link up with you.

    my email is zhi.chew(at)gmail.com

This isn't a trick or a scam or a come on or anything of that nature. I'm just a gaming fanatic like you and quite frankly I'm tired of beating the CPU over and over and would love to get in some playing time other than waiting for the occasional player to drop by.

    Sincerely,

    Zhi

  2. Zhi,

How's the competition at Shibuya? Is it the Kaikan arcade? Have you played against any top/well-known players? I'm always eager to hear people's experiences playing against the best...

  3. I used to go to More's before I decided I wanted to keep my lungs intact for the future, but while there, I got destroyed by Yuu-vega who wasn't even playing X vega, he was fooling around with super vega to test out the properties of his feint head stomp (which turns out to have a crazy spin on it, check it out). I think he racked up about 35 in a row before he ARG came in finally knocked him out.

I've made 2 observations of yuu which I think set him apart from any other player out there.

    1) he is by far the most consistent touch of death comboer I've ever seen. One cross up and you're gone.
    The guy is clockwork.

    2) he is also by far the best reverse thrower in the world. A lot of dudes give up on the corner in a dic. vs gief or honda match, but he has a nasty ability to get that reverse frame in before you can get your tick attack in. The skill is something I thought only the cpu had, (think cpu chunli and her crazy ability to throw you anytime you get close), but yuu comes close to acting like a cpu in this respect.

I played against tama who was fooling around with a yellow ken, but still to no avail. We're talking about 1000yen straight plunked down on each player. That guy is older than I thought.

As for shibuya, I go to "shinjuku sports land" which is confusing because the arcade is indeed in shibuya, right across of kaikan. It has less smoke, and consequently less competition. I know the manager there so I try to support him because he's just the dopest guy. There's a hyper machine down there which to my knowledge, only I play. The manager and his staff there are pretty good, but don't play too often as it is mainly used as a vf and 3s hub.

In Yokohama there is a place called "game in 7 islands" a few seconds away from the station, and I played against Taira there. His crew drops serious loot not only playing, but commuting all over Japan to play. He'll make the jump from shinjuku to yokohama if he gets a call about playing. They make jokes that his life is only hyper, but with his skill, I don't doubt that at all. If you play honda you have a chance at turtling, but other than that the guy is pretty much unstoppable on all accounts. Its there that I first saw the meaty jump forward in action for the first time. The competition is superb there and there is a dash geif that makes you rethink what gief can and cannot grab (just trust me on this). It seems like his range is expanded. I would put him up there with the likes of pony, but with the cheapness of dash characters. There's also a nasty red x guile who first showed me the five short combo (cross short, duck short 2x, stand short, flash kick) which I thought was pretty nuts. I never thought guile's combos went past 4 in a real gaming situation but it was used there. There's also a chubby worker there that plays hyper boxer, and is pretty on point with multiple dash punch combos, which are guaranteed dizzy/redizzy.
The timing to do those combos is absolutely insane.

In kawasaki, at tilt, about 7 min from the station you can find the hangout of yaya. There's good competition there but you have to be lucky. He comes with a crew of about 3 or 4 and they play all night before they roll out.

anyways, I'm not sure who is reading this, but if anyone is in Japan feel free to hit me up on email and we'll arrange a spar somewhere. I got yen to burn.

  4. Thanks for that scoop, Zhi! Just as a movie hound I've noticed that player X will often appear in videos from a saturday event and then again somewhere really far away on a sunday event.

Yeah.... I am in the US. There is an arcade here in New York where a handful of people play ST so I consider myself lucky on that front. No smoking, too! Heh.

  5. if you're referring to Chinatown Fair, then the trade off for no smoke is

    1) crappy controllers
    2) no seats
    3) smell of sweat from those dance dance guys next to you, who by the way, are extremely talented...and gothic.

but you get to be in C-town for ice cream and xiaolongbao!

    awesome!

I went back home and tried to play on American sticks there, and sad to say, once you go sanwa gumball, you can never go back. Its a shame you're stateside, would have loved for an opportunity to spar. Any chance of you coming back? Any recommendations on good arcades for consistent high level play?

I once went up to ikebukuro looking for some arcades and the scene there is pretty thick. Only problem I have is finding a 50 yen place. I hear that all the kansai peeps play at a 20 yen joint. No wonder they are so good they play virtually for free!!!

God bless America! Actually the only thing that bothers me is:
    4) loud noise
    ... but I have earplugs.

I played against Issei once at CTF and the joysticks were making him miserable. (He was only playing ST because the 3S machine was down that day.) Dude still hit crouching jab -> double typhoon on his first try.

Shinjuku Mikado has a "free play" (i.e. fixed rate) night on wednesdays. Fierce competition.
Akihabara HEY has a 10 yen (!) ST (and/or HSF) machine.

  7. Zhi, you gotta hook up with us at Mikado in Shinjuku! I'm only in Tokyo for this month probably but go there usually Wed/Fri/Sat. The top players go to other arcades too but I'm not sure on the schedules. I see Taira there a lot, I also play there with a few other foreigners. I am on a mission to prove dhalsim can win against any guile. I didn't really have any trouble with Yoshio last Wed but Muteki is stepping it up- only 4 wins or so out of 10 to 15 games with him. I have been able to get a bunch of corner traps going and extend them with precise spacing, but if they get one jump in it can mean round over- you almost win and you get dizzied, then combo-supered- so uh, if you want to see higher combos then 3 or 4 hits regularly performed in real matches that add up to round over, these guys have it. mtsun and a few others can do this consistently (though mtsun seems kinda cranky, esp when he loses).

  8. sweet mother of god someone has responded! Today is Friday, so I'm assuming that you will be there today? Can you post directions on how to get to Mikado? I'm sure I've been sure but perhaps I've forgotten the place as I am more of a More's lurker.

Or if you could email me your contact info at zhi.chew(at)gmail.com, that would be cool too.

  9. Go to MORE tonight. Notice that you cannot enter because it shut down and closed 2 or 3 weeks ago at least. :(.
from MORE, keep going down that wide alley, away from train stations direction. you will get to a crossing to cross a wide street, cross, and when get to other side turn left and walk like 50 meters or so, until you get to a corner that I think a McDonald:s is on- be careful cause there;s like 3 mcD:s in 300 meter radius. anyway turn right at that corner, and keep going down that street. mikado is on a corner, across street from seibu (?) line, and a "US hyper mart" place like 100 yen store. go up to 4.23rdth floor and hang out at the 3 or so st/ae machines. my email is fawnix at your same domain, hope to see you there.
